Scotland Community-Macdonell Scholarship Award The Scotland Community-Macdonell Scholarship Award is presented to high school seniors residing in the Scotland Community in Potomac, Maryland. The recipients demonstrate academic achievement, leadership, service to others, good citizenship and promise of success. The purpose of the award is to acknowledge young people who have contributed service to the community and to help develop their skills for future leadership. The award was established in 1997 by the members of Saint Mark Presbyterian Church in Rockville, Maryland in honor of their founding pastor The Reverend Dr. James G. Macdonell on the occasion of his retirement. Dr. Macdonell was a leader in the effort to save the Scotland neighborhood from being overtaken by the residential expansion of the 1960’s and he has been a tireless worker and advocate for the community. Dr Macdonell’s deep commitment to the Scotland community and his love of young people make this award a fitting expression of appreciation. The award is made annually and the recipient(s) will be chosen by a committee of representatives from Saint Mark Presbyterian Church and the community. The recipient(s) will be honored at the annual Scotland community picnic held in August and the funds will be made available directly to the recipient’s school of choice.
